DEAR SANTA PAWS, Holiday Wish Lists from our Mutts, by Disney and Riley (via author person Heather)

Dear Santa Paws,

We’ve be exceptionally good this year for Jack Russell Terriers. We moved to our new house in the woods, and we LOVE all the squirrels and birds that we get to chase. We have a big yard, and we can see anyone coming onto the cul de sac from all the windows. The new place has trails, and we get to go on more walks than ever! Riley is the Director of Security, and he takes his job seriously. He guards our house from bikers, walkers, delivery folks, and squirrels. I like the delivery drivers, especially the pizza guy. I’m the Greeter. My job is to welcome everyone (except the squirrels).

This year, we’d like a really cool chewy bone and some more squeaky toys. Riley pulls the squeaker out of all the ones we have. We would also like for you to help our wonderful friends at the Richmond Animal League clear the shelters for the holidays. There are so many puppies and kitties that need a great home. And we want all our four-legged friends to find their fur-ever home.

You are the greatest. Riley and I will be in our best behavior and try not to sample the cookies the hoomans leave out for you on Christmas Eve. It’s hard to resist cookies. We’ll try our best.

Many Thanks and Hugs and Kisses,

Disney (and Riley)

  1. Fun letter from Jack Russell terriers to Santa! Sounds like they have been good and will get treats. Riley is the security guard, Disney is the greeter in their new house in the woods--never a dull moment, I'm sure. Unless it is nap time . . .

In fact, it looked a bit like Gettysburg the day after the battle. In the big central living room people lay on the floor, sprawled across sofas, slouched in leather recliners, and slumped over laptop computers with hands hovering over keyboards. Crumpled paper dotted the floor. Glasses of iced tea and bottles of beer sat forgotten on tables. Flip-flops were scattered randomly around the room, but the people weren’t dead. They were writers. They called themselves the Sand Fiddlers Writers Group and this was the week of their annual retreat. Sophie Perone, author of the popular Mysterious Gourmet books, had volunteered to do all the cooking and on this morning, Sophie had arranged her special cheese straws in tall glass tumblers and placed them all around the room so the writers could snack on them while they we
