THE REAL DOGS OF THE MUTT MYSTERIES SERIES by Heather Weidner

My Mutt Mystery novellas have starred a Jack Russell Terrier, a Rotteweiler, and an English bulldog as sidekicks. All have been great companions and have helped solved a crime or two.

Darby, the JRT, in “Diggin’ up Dirt” in To Fetch a Thief, is based on my Jack, Disney. She and her brother are from the same litter. They’re ten, and still full of energy as ever. When it’s quiet with two Jacks, something is definitely up. My two like to dig in the back yard, especially if they hear moles and voles. One afternoon, I watched them dig out a mole, and it gave me the idea for a murder mystery. Darby helps her person find something spooky in the backyard of their new house.

Mr. Oliver, in “The Fast and the Furriest” in To Fetch a Scoundrel, is a full grown, male Rottweiler who lives and works with his person at the fictional Amelia Speedway. He’s in charge of security, and he’s a big pussycat when he’s not on duty. Oliver returns for more adventures in “Wags to Riches” in the To Fetch a Killer (2021).  My Uncle Jeff has had a series of Rotties through the years, and they are so well trained. Oliver is based on his last dog, Tucker. His current pup, Ruckus, is a handful, but I fully expect him to grow up to be another Oliver.

Margaret Thatcher Reynolds in “Strut Your Mutt” in To Fetch a Villain is an tubby, English bulldog. She appears in the three Delanie Fitzgerald mysteries and two short stories. She is the sidekick to the sleuth’s partner, Duncan Reynolds. Duncan shares everything with his pudgy friend, and she loves going to the office, scoring snacks, and riding shotgun in his yellow Camaro. Sadly, Margaret wasn’t based on a  real dog. My grandmother loved bulldogs, so that’s where the inspiration for Margaret came from.

MUTT TALK: Meet Top Dog Cloud from "Ruff Goodbye" by Rosemary Shomaker

Woof! Ruff. Woof, woof. Rumble—brrr. Howl, sing, ruff . Hello, Mutt Mysteries readers; I’ll translate my dog-speak to English so you understand me. I’m Cloud, the loyal and brave miniature poodle in “Ruff Goodbye." I’m light gray and fluffy; no “show cuts” for me! My human, Curtis Powell, promised me I’d never have to sport a Continental Clip, Lamb Clip, Lion Cut, Cupcake Cut, or any of those varied, yet typical, poodle dog salon special “hairdos.” Nope, the dog show circuit was not for us. Don’t get me wrong, those canines work very hard, and well, they look fantastic. That’s just not for us. I look more like the second image I’ve sent with this interview. My favorite human, Curt, has died of cancer as “Ruff Goodbye” unfolds, and you get to meet me and other characters as the community mourns his death. My next favorite humans are Curt’s stepdaughter Julie and his wife Sharon. Curt’s friends know me, and in the story my barking alerts them to problems. I defend Sharon whe...
